People in the workplace are finding themselves increasingly involved in projects. Whether project work takes all their time or just some of their time, these same people all too often haven�t been trained to manage projects or even serve as project team members.
The skills of project management are the subject of a new workshop entitled Getting the Zoo Out of Project Management: An Emergency Kit for the Accidental Project Manager. The workshop, which addresses leading, planning, organizing and controlling, is a hands-on experience. It gives participants a practical working knowledge of the concepts used in effective project management while being fun, interesting and understandable.
Typically, project management courses deal with the technical aspects of projects with little or no concern about the people aspects. Furthermore, many courses don�t provide students the opportunity to practice newly learned skills before getting back to their jobs. This can cause trial and tribulation for the students, who when back to work, try to apply the concepts taught in class. “The Zoo” offers an experiential approach to learning as opposed to a strictly academic style.
The course, based on the book The Noah Project published by Gower Publishing, walks participants through the various steps of effective project management. By the end of the workshop, the participants have obtained hands-on work with a project from conception to completion.
As an added benefit to the program, there is a personal coaching session provided two-to-three weeks after the workshop. This session ensures that the participant understand the concepts of the material and looks at practical ways to implement the skills and tools provided in the workshop.
