TITLE: Books for America
Launches Books for our Troops’ Kids
SUBTITLE: Providing books to children of members of every
branch of our armed services
Washington, DC, April
7, 2003 – “Support our Troops!” has
become a familiar rallying cry and Americans have always
answered the call. Recognizing that the youngest members of
our military families face serious emotional hardships when
moms and dads are called for extended duty overseas, Books
for America, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in
Washington, DC has launched Books for our Troops Kids.
“Members of the
United States Armed Forces have fought and
died for our freedom, and for the freedom of people around
the world for over 225 years,” relates Stephen Hersey,
president and founder of Books for America, on his reasons
for introducing the Books for our Troops’ Kids
program. “Regardless of our personal political, social or
religious views, one thing that all Americans can agree upon
is that our troops and their families deserve our support
both during times of war and times of peace. Books for our
Troops’ Kids will not only help educate our troops’ children
by supplying thousands of children’s books and organizing
reading events with bases, but will also help ease some of
their hardships. Donating books will help bring smiles to
thousands of deserving military kids,” said Hersey.
Individuals are invited
to visit www.booksforamerica.org and
click on the Books for our Troops’ Kids link. There are two
ways to provide books to our troops’ kids:
• First, individuals
can collect gently-used children’s books
their children might not need anymore and mail them to the
organization’s warehouse:
Books for America/Troops
c/o Storage USA
1001 N. Fillmore
Arlington, VA 22201
• Second, individuals
are invited use the links provided on
Books for America’s Web site to purchase new children’s books
from Amazon.com. Individuals can designate a particular base
or branch of the armed services to be recipients of the
books. Due to limited resources and security concerns, the
bases cannot accept books shipped directly by individuals.
Books for America will gather together the books as they
arrive at the organization’s warehouse and ship them in
quantity to the bases.
